My [non]Accent

I can’t believe I’m posting a “vlog.”

It’s something I swore I’d never do.

Pardon the eye rolling in the beginning and the near-whispering.

If you wanted to follow along, here is the list of words/questions forΒ The Accent Vlog: Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught

  • What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
  • What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
  • What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
  • What do you call gym shoes?
  • What do you say to address a group of people?
  • What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped
  • body and extremely long legs?
  • What do you call your grandparents?
  • What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry
  • groceries at the supermarket?
  • What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
  • What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

Now you all have to play along so I don’t feel so silly.

  1. Ha! I was just pondering doing this tonight!

  2. Omg! You are adorable! lol
I lived in New England for a few years, so I know the accent, but it doesn’t sound like you have one. πŸ˜›
I might have to try this when I have time and can figure out how to make a video…

  3. Ugh, my computer is acting wonkie and I can’t see videos…I will have to go on T’s and try to watch it.

  4. Cute! I’m going to do this one soon πŸ™‚

  5. I’m so glad that you say “route” and “coupon” like a normal person. They’re said like “root” and “coopon” not “rowt” and “cue-pon” hehe. Love it!! It’s so nice to be able to put a voice to the blog. My hair is totally like yours right now, don’t worry πŸ˜›

  6. Ohno! I’m lying next to the boyfriend who just fell asleep so I can’t watch your vlog! And the bedroom’s freezing cold and I can’t remember where the earphones are…damn, damn. Something to look forward to in the morning – besides breakfast, that is.

Gotta say, though, my boyfriend’s biggest girl (8 yrs) wanted to skip school tomorrow because they are getting up early to go help out at the zoo and I thought 1) she’ll regret that, and 2) city kid! she heard the mention of dung shovelling and I could tell she felt that was…embarrassing. So I broke out the amazing tales of how I shovelled about a gazillion wheelbarrows of horse manure before turning 16 in exchange for riding lessons, and she thought it was hilarious. My reward: have to get up at five thirty to somehow get her and boyfriend off to school at the most ungodly hour ever, hahaha…:-).

Vlog in the morning! I’m looking forward!

  7. You so don’t sound like I thought you did, which is weird, because I wasn’t aware that I had thought about it at all!! πŸ˜‰

If I were to do this (which I can’t, for obvious reasons!), it would take forever, since I can go either way on so many words!! I don’t have a clue where I get my non-accent from.

  8. Aww this made me smile to watch! Lol, “I guess it’s… raining…” Hahah, totally what I would of said too!

  9. “Idea-r” I hate that! I am contemplating doing this but think it could be potentially very embarrassing!

  10. I love how you say sure! You say “sh-oo-er” (well, kinda like that) and I say “sh-er”.

It’s so refreshing to “see” you and hear you talk! πŸ™‚

  11. A voice for that lovely face! This is too cute, I will be playing along tomorrow so stay tuned for the post πŸ™‚

  12. LOVE your voice! you look so adorable in your vlog! πŸ™‚ So glad u decided to post this!

  13. I love this! I loved seeing & hearing you like we would in real life. I definitely pronounce some of those differently. Accents/non-accents are so interesting to hear!

  14. Oh of course you are adorable! I’m not surprised, but I loved having my thoughts confirmed! This was fun to watch. I love hearing how people speak around the country. Thank you for sharing, sweet girl!

  15. This was so cute πŸ™‚ . I wasn’t really interested in your accent because as a foreigner the only thing that matters to me is whether I can understand you or not. If I understand what you say, I don’t care if you speak some version of American English, British English or even Indian English ( if you have friends from India you know what I mean). I liked the video so much because you gave us – your readers – the chance to feel like we’ve met you in person.

I’d never post a video like this because I’d probably sound very stupid. And in my language I don’t think I have an accent at all. By the way, I didn’t know there was a special expression for when rain falls while the sun is shining in English. In my language we say “mechka se zheni” when it happens. It means “a bear is getting married” and it makes absolutely no sense πŸ˜€ .

  16. That was great!!! It’s always interesting to put a name/blog/face/voice together!!!!

  17. I’ve been meaning to do this video too lately!! Your voice is way softer than I imagined it to be for some reason…I love hearing bloggers talk!

  18. I was just about to say what Gabriela said – your voice is a lot quieter and more high pitched than I expected! And don’t worry, your hair looked fine to me. πŸ˜‰

  19. movesnmunchies

ahh ilove vlogs!! i can barely hear you though!!

  20. nic

    awww!! you’re way to cute!!
just hat to say that! πŸ™‚

  21. It’s a woodlouse! :p
I love these Vlogs – I’ve discovered that ALL Americans (I’ve watched like, 6 of these) talk very slowly and sound like they’re asking questions aaall the time (ie going up at the end of the sentence) – it’s so funny!
But my dear, you are so cute!!

  22. Aww it’s so lovely to hear you and put a voice to your face/blog – you’re so cute! πŸ™‚
Well obviously because I’m from England I say quite a few things differently to you so it’s interesting to hear your accent compared to mine. And I agree with Freya – Americans talk slowly and sound like they’re asking a question at the end of every sentence lol!!

  23. Very fun! I’ve been meaning to do this for weeks now — tomorrow might be the day.

  24. LOVE it! And I have to say, you sound a LOT different than I thought you would.. you are so soft spoken!
I reallly want to do this too but I’m really nervous about doing a vlog..
